Looking to Add Color to Your Porch? Easy Plant Tips for Beginners
Want to add a little color and cheer to your porch this spring, but not sure where to start? No worries, we’ve got you. You don’t need a perfect green thumb or a magazine-worthy yard to create a welcoming outdoor space. With a few simple basics, you can brighten your porch with confidence.
Start with Sunlight
Before buying plants, take note of how much sun your porch or yard gets each day. Some plants thrive in full sun, while others prefer partial shade or lower light. Choosing the right plant for the right spot is one of the easiest ways to set yourself up for success.
Some of my beginner-friendly favorites include:
- Petunias
- Begonias
- Marigolds
- Impatiens
- Geraniums
- Coleus
- Vinca vine
- Potato vine
- Creeping Jenny
For an easy, eye-catching container, try one my go-to combinations:
- A spike plant in the back, impatiens for color, and creeping Jenny and vinca vine flowing over the front
- Coleus paired with potato vine cascading over the pot for a simple, colorful option
Begin Small
You don’t need to transform your entire yard overnight. Start with a few manageable additions like:
- Herbs such as basil or rosemary
- Hanging baskets
- Planters with a variety of flowers
- Raised beds
- Hardy shrubs
- Simple seasonal flowers
Read the Plant Tag
Those little tags are more helpful than they look. They’ll tell you:
- How much sunlight the plant needs
- Watering requirements
- Mature plant size
- Whether it’s a good fit for containers or garden beds
Don’t Overthink Watering
Most beginner plants do better with deep watering a few times a week rather than light watering every day. Morning watering is usually best, and adding mulch can help retain moisture while reducing weeds. Be sure to also keep local water restrictions in mind.
Keep Maintenance Simple
A little upkeep goes a long way. Regularly:
- Prune dead blooms
- Pull weeds early
- Check for pests
- Refresh soil or mulch as needed
