Best Parks & Trails in North Carolina’s Triangle and Triad for a Fresh-Start Reset
If you’re new to the Triangle or the Triad (or you’ve lived here forever and still keep saying “we should get outside more”), consider this your easy guide to fresh air. From stroller-friendly paved paths to wooded creek walks and “let’s tire the pups out” fields, these local parks and trails are perfect for weeknight resets and weekend adventures.
Triangle Picks
Knightdale Station Park | Knightdale, NC
This one is basically the overachiever of parks, in the best way of course. You’ve got multi-purpose trails, athletic fields, a dog park, picnic shelters, and even an amphitheater for events.
Don’t miss: the splash pad when it’s warm out (a.k.a. the fastest way to become your kid’s favorite person)
Best for: family hangouts, post-work walks, dog outings, “we need to burn energy” afternoons.
Harper Park | Knightdale, NC
A great neighborhood-style park with tennis + pickleball courts, a picnic shelter, and a surprisingly peaceful wooded feel for being right in town.
Why we love it: shaded woods and open lawn space, easy to pop over for a quick reset without committing to a whole “hike.”
Best for: a low-key walk, pickle ball, and a calm breather between errands.
Hollybrook Park | Wendell, NC
Hollybrook brings the “let’s stay awhile” energy plus walking paths, a winding trail, and pickleball courts right by the playground and basketball courts.
It’s also designed with inclusivity in mind: the playground is ADA-compliant and recognized as a National Demonstration Site for accessibility.
Best for: families, a casual evening stroll, and anyone who loves a park that feels welcoming for everyone.
Trails at Wendell Falls | Wendell, NC
If you want options, this is your spot. Wendell Falls is known for a robust trail network—10+ miles overall—and a mix of parks and loops that make it easy to tailor your outing.
For a quick “choose your own adventure,” the community trail map highlights loops like Falls Loop (4.25 miles) plus shorter routes like Asheville Loop (0.38) and Treelight Trail (0.75).
Best for: walkers, runners, and anyone who likes a pretty route with flexible distances.
Anderson Point Park | Raleigh, NC
A local favorite with a big perk: it connects to Raleigh’s greenway system and offers access toward the Neuse River Greenway Trail.
Best for: walking, biking, and “I want a trail day without driving far.”
Dorothea Dix Park | Raleigh, NC
Dix is Raleigh’s iconic “big sky + city skyline” park moment. It’s open daily (sunrise/sunset hours) and is known for everything from scenic strolls to a grass-covered off-leash dog park.
And yes—those famous summer sunflowers are a real thing (and a top-tier photo excuse).
Best for: picnics, skyline views, dog parents, festivals, and anyone craving a little main-character energy outdoors.
Triad Picks
Horizons Park | Rural Hall, NC
A “quietly awesome” park with lots going on: nature/hiking loops, a dog park, disc golf, and even mountain bike trails.
If you like a defined walk, the park’s hiking trails map shows Loop A (1.03 miles) and Loop B (1.23 miles).
Best for: unplugging, beginner-friendly disc golf, and a woodsy walk that still feels approachable.
Kerner Mill Greenway | Kernersville, NC
A convenient, easy greenway-style outing, great for a quick walk/run that still feels scenic.
Best for: a simple out-and-back, strollers, and “I only have 45 minutes but I need fresh air.”
The Quarry at Grant Park | Winston-Salem, NC
Quick note: this one is in Winston-Salem (not Kernersville) and it’s worth the little drive. The focal point is an overlook pier with views of the deep blue quarry water (seriously pretty), plus multiple overlooks for different angles.
Best for: sunset views, peaceful walks, and taking visitors somewhere that feels like a hidden gem.
Oak Ridge Town Park | Oak Ridge, NC
This is a community hub kind of park: walking trails, playgrounds, fields, and a pond, plus plenty of space to spread out.
Best for: family weekends, dog walks, casual laps, and community events.
Cascades Preserve Loop | near Oak Ridge/Kernersville, NC
A wooded preserve with creek views and a trail that winds close to two miles—expect a little more of a “nature hike” feel here.
Best for: when you want something scenic and slightly more adventurous than a paved greenway.
Creekside Park | Archdale/Trinity area, NC
Creekside is stacked: 3+ miles of asphalt walking trails, disc golf, dog park, courts, fields, and playgrounds (aka, everyone in the group can find their thing).
Best for: active families, disc golfers, long walks, and “we need options.”
These parks make it easy to feel more connected to your community (and to remember that yes, fresh air does in fact improve everything). If you check any of these out, let us know which spot becomes your go-to trail!
